A new video has been posted on ArenaNet’s blog that delved into what it actually takes to collect and the sounds of weapons slashings, guns firing and adventures walking (to name but a few actions).
I find the sound design of multimedia (that being movies, videogames and such) really interesting. Great sound design can really create amazing immersion in a game, anyone who has played Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will know what i’m talking about. For B:BC2 the sound designers physically went out and recorded the sound of the all guns and such which produced really realistic soundscape that helped you get into the shoes of a soldier.
Since things like magic doesn’t actually exist the sound team at ArenaNet had to improvise (smashing in TV’s) in order to get the sound. The result of their meticulous search for the right sounding… er sound for every attack, spell and situation will produce a soundscape that will help you get into the mindset of your chosen adventurer and find the world realistic.
I like this quote from the video in paticular…
The goal of any good sound design is to make you not pay attention to the sound, but have so good that it feels real and natural.
Stayed tuned as more blog posts are on the way about the more in-depth process of sound design in Guild Wars 2.
