Arenanet speak about trying GW2 on console platforms and the problems with the social aspects

In a interview with videogamer.com brand manager Chris Lye talks about how the development team has tested the waters with console ports.

We’ve dabbled with console. It isn’t an active priority right now because we’re making so much progress with Guild Wars 2 on the PC that we want to push all the resources specifically onto PC at this point.

However the challengers of console aren’t technical ones, rather ones of usability and user experience Lye explains.

But to speak about console gaming for MMOs, based on the experiences that I’ve had with other console based MMOs I think the biggest problem is creating that social glue that makes MMOs so special, that make them sticky and want to pull you back into that community,” Lye stated.

“I really, I’ve yet to see a console MMO that does a really great job of that, like finding new friends, making parties easy, making communication between party members or guild members fun.”

In response to how well an MMO would work with a controller, Lye added: “I think that is the biggest challenge. I think the mechanics of fighting can work just fine with a game controller. Can the social glue work without a keyboard? That still remains to be seen.

With the plan for smartphone and IPad app’s I would be comfortable personally to use those platforms for the ‘chatting and social’ experience through those devices virtual keyboard.

There’s something that different and relaxing about sitting down on a couch rather playing a video game at a computer that I enjoy. However there is allot of point and click with the mouse in Guildwars and Gw2 so over coming this on the console port is another challenge.

So would you like to see Gw2 come to console? Why or why not?

Pre-order bonus? But seriously MMO’s on the console is interesting to hear but i’m glad ArenaNet if fully focusing on a PC release intitally.

I tried DC Universe online on the PS3 and although the controller is perfectly designed for combat etc, it is so difficult to do any social interaction that it’s not very compelling.

I’m glad ANet are focussing on the PC, tbh. The sooner the release date comes, the better!

I know it’s an old article but this may help. I would love this game on my console. For one I have no problem hooking a keyboard up to my second controller port and holding it in my lap for when I need/want to type. Actually I do it now on another mmo. Truthfully nobody know that I’m not on a pc unless I tell them. I don’t really want to drop 1k on a comp to play 1 game when my 350 dollar laptop is good enough for my schoolwork already. Im really excited for this game and am a 100% buy if it came to console. The same way pc gamers love their mouse and keyboard us console gamers love our controllers and giant tv screens :)

No, just No. an MMO would not work on a console, the idea of them is to be able to chat with party members and tell them were to go and what to do, and how do we do that? with a keyboard, something a console lacks. Also the mechanics of an MMO require a lot of point and click, another thing that consoles lack. And as for the couch over computer part, Connect your computer to your TV with an HDMI for gods sake.

SEXY CHICK by the way, wearing a Halo shirt, and has a master chief helmet, and multiple posters of games behind her, playing Guild Wars 2. ;)
