Lets speculate – on how many players to a server

So seeing that GW2 world is mainly persistent (un-instanced) I am wondering how many players the could fit per server.

I think based on todays technology and how much awesome experience now Arenanet have in running a MMORPG I recon they could do 5000 players which is allot larger than any mmorpg I know of but I think it could be done.

I guess it also depends on how big the game world is. It can be over crowded.

Thoughts?

I agree that with today’s technology larger server population would be possible. I don’t know how big, but 5000 could be possible. Not sure if game world is big enough for such amount. The over crowd is not such huge issue (except maybe technically, causing lag etc.) because game is build to support people fighting mobs together.

I think it is possible that it could, I remember hearing (sorry no source) that each ‘area’ are separate maps divided by loading screens, this different to WoW’s system which largely has no load screens will a fully open map. The separation could reduce stress on servers (i’m no expert though) and thusly allow more players onto a single server.

EVE Online do 55,000+ on one server farm and game instance. Sometimes more, though it’s different to games like wow, gw2 etc.

And yeah Redean, that approach would help, but they’d quickly run into problems with popular cities / areas being overloaded (like EVE does).. so it’d need to be coupled with something that could spread the load of popular areas out over their server cluster (Also like EVE does).
